Illustrations by Child Refugees from Syria Living in Türkiye

Türkiye is home to roughly 3.6 million people displaced by civil war in Syria. Many of them are children.

At Uprooted, hand-drawn illustrations from students at Tzu Chi’s El Menahil International School in Istanbul take the spotlight in a special section devoted to sharing the tender, impressionable, and often overlooked perspective of child refugees. What’s more, videos featuring each student artists’ statement accompany the pieces on display.

Relief for Those Displaced From Syria

After civil war erupted in Syria in 2011, it forced more than 6.8 million to flee the country and left another 6.9 million internally displaced. In response, Tzu Chi volunteers across the region devised special programs to accommodate their specific needs, including in Jordan, Serbia, and Türkiye (which hosts the largest population of Syrian refugees).

In Türkiye

Explore Tzu Chi’s extensive work in Istanbul, where volunteers spearheaded efforts to establish El Menahil International School specifically for child refugees from Syria. At Uprooted, you will see how El Menahil lives up to its name, which in Arabic, means oasis.

In Jordan & Serbia

Discover how Tzu Chi volunteers provided support to those arriving in Jordan at the onset of the war, and how our programming evolved into regular free health clinics. Then, see how those stuck in transit in Serbia received cold-weather relief and more.

Relief for Those Displaced From Ukraine

After escalating conflict turned into war in Ukraine, it is estimated that nearly 8 million people fled from Ukraine and left another 5.9 million internally displaced. See how Tzu Chi volunteers around the world mobilized to host distributions in nearby countries including Poland, Moldova, and Romania, while also teaming up with global and local NGOs to do even more.
