Jan 21, 2020 (NEW YORK, NY): The Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation, also known as Tzu Chi USA, has opened a photography exhibit that commemorates the 10th anniversary of the 2010 Haiti Earthquake. Till its closing on March 15, 2020, there will be free, daily tours that are open to the public at the Tzu Chi Center (229 E 60th Street, New York, NY 10022) everyday from 11 AM to 4 PM.
Called “Keeping Hope Alive: 10 Years of Care in Haiti,” the exhibit began with a grand opening ceremony on Sunday, January 12, 2020 in the Upper East Side, the location of the Tzu Chi Center. The reception featured opening remarks by special guests (including Permanent Representative of Haiti to the United Nations Patrick Saint-Hilaire, New York City Council Member Mathieu Eugene, and photographer Keziah Jean from Haiti), an interfaith prayer, an emotional performance by musician Paul Beaubrun, guided tours of the exhibit, and vegetarian hors d’oeuvres.
...it's good to remember the tragic, but it's also, what's more important is, to remember the love.
The focus of the exhibit was to showcase the short and long-term relief efforts made by Tzu Chi in Haiti. It featured 100 photos, including from immediate disaster relief, medical outreaches, school rebuilding, flood relief in 2014, and rice distributions to help ease poverty and hunger in Port-au-Prince’s most impoverished neighborhoods. Visitors will be able to see the loss, resilience, and hope for the country’s future through guided tours.
I think photography is really important… because sometimes you can't communicate things through the written word. All of that serves to really just... touch on people's hearts.
The exhibit is free and open to the public every day from 11 AM to 4 PM till March 15, with complementary, docent-guided tours. RSVPs are encouraged through Eventbrite and all are welcome to our exhibit closing festivities on Sunday, March 15.
