This month, we are pleased to welcome Dr. Ingrid Liu, Cognitive and Molecular Neuroscientist and President of Tzu Chi University to season four of C.A.F.E. 229. She will join series host Dr. Joanne Chang to discuss the role of education, her experience as a woman in academia, and how that experience impacts her vision for Tzu Chi University.

About Dr Ingrid Liu
President Liu is TCU’s first woman president since its inception in 1994. Tzu Chi University was established in the eastern region of Taiwan, to raise the level of healthcare and education, while inspiring students to do good deeds and help others. The university upholds the motto of “kindness, compassion, joy and unselfish giving” and strives to nurture students into those who respect life and care for living beings. In early 2000, the affiliated primary and secondary schools were set up and a comprehensive education from kindergarten up to the Ph.D.
In 1993, President Liu accepted the invitation from dean of the Tzu Chi College of Medicine, Ming-Liang Lee, to become a faculty member. In 1998, she received TCU’s scholarship to study neuroscience at the University of Southern California. After completing her Ph.D. program, she came back to TCU and dedicated herself to teaching and research in the Department of Molecular Biology and Human Genetics and the Institute of Medical Sciences.
President Liu is interested in brain research, seeing things clearly, and carrying things out effectively. In 2010, she became a member of TCU’s administrative team; in 2013, she was appointed dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Basic Education, and director of Faculty Development and Instructional Resources; in 2014, she was promoted to dean of the Office of Academic Affairs; in 2017, she was appointed a TCU vice president. In 2019, she was nominated as TCU’s president by the Presidential Search Committee and approved by the Board of Directors.
