Event Description
Explore the limitations of GDP (Gross Domestic Product) as a measure of Sustainable Development, and deep-dive into alternative approaches towards capturing the progress and impact of the policies and actions created by our choices and designs.
Background:
While Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has been widely used as a broad indicator of economic progress, it lacks the capacity to capture the multidimensionality of sustainable development. GDP fails to account for environmental damage, depletion of resources, or unpaid care work often done by women. It further cannot account for the unequal distribution of wealth and the negative social impacts of economic activities. In line with Action 54 of the Pact for the Future which calls for a framework that goes beyond GDP to measure progress on the economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainable development, our session will explore how to mainstream human rights to foster social inclusions through youth engagement and financing for sustainable development. We will also discuss the next steps for a multilateral, gender-balanced, and intergenerational approach to adopting a more comprehensive framework beyond the existing GDP.
